I am completely in awe of the natural world: of rivers, trees, color, light, air. Organic randomness is beautifully organized beyond our capacity to comprehend, let alone create: the way that leaves grow, so uniquely but irrelevantly their own, the way they hang on to their branches and bristle with the wind, and the elegant way they fall to the ground; the way they change the light; their colors and forms. Years ago when I was walking, I noticed that many weeks after the leaves had fallen and been trampled on the sidewalks, when it seemed that nothing physical remained, there were still traces of them on the pavement - a record of their last shapes, their last days. There was something so fascinating, so precise in the marks they had left behind. This is what I explore in my painting - the spirit behind this sometimes glorious, sometimes melancholy, but always beautiful natural world.
